COURSE CONTENT
Day 1
  • Basic Electricity
  • Voltage, Current, Resistance, Power.
  • AC & DC.
  • Types of Circuits
  • Switches, Sockets
  •  Fuses, MCB’s, RCD’s.
  • Single and Three Phase
  • Star Delta,
  • Soft Start,
  •  Transformers
This session will also contain a “hands-on” where each participant will build circuits using switches, sockets, M.C.B.’s and RCD’s. Also all participants will measure these circuits to identify and comprehend “Voltage, Current & Resistance”.

Day 2
  • Safety in Electricity.
  • How to make safe.
  • Isolation of Supply.
  • Lock Out Tag Out
In this session all participants will partake in a “hands on” that will involve the making safe of machines electrically. Also all participants will be tested on Electrical Safety of Machines. In the late noon all participants will sit an exam so their competencies can be measured.

Day 3
Please note that the machinery used in the practical sessions is related to the polymer processing sector  as this is the equipment that is available at the training centre, but the praticals covered are equally applicable to any industrial machinery.
  • Machine Safety
  • Practical Isolation, (lock and tag procedure)
  • Starting and stopping – importance of emergency stop
  • Lifting Equipment safety –brief overview of how to properly connect and secure lifting gear – eye bolts, shackles, cranes etc Introduction to “The Machine” and all the ancillaries. General overview of plastic processing equipment (brief overview) Machine Ancillaries Process control – how they work and general problems
  • Material Loader
  • Dryer
  • Water Heater
  • Hot Runner Controller
  • Compressor
  • Chiller/Air Blast cooler
Day 4
  •  Machine Operation.
  • Process Control The Machine.
  • Understanding electrical drawings
  • Electrics (24V to 400V) Brief overview of other machine controls and how they interact with the electrical system:
  • Hydraulics, (Valves, Cylinders, Pumps)
  • Pneumatics, (Valves, Cylinders), importance of clean dry air

Day 3 and Day 4 training will take place in the workshop where all trainees will be involved in the operation of the machines - in which maintenance, fault finding, safe working and good work ethics will be paramount. At the end of this troubleshooting session there will be a exam where each trainee will undergo a series of practical examinations to determine their competencies. 10 to 12 faultfinding questions will be given to the group - each participant will be given 3-4 of these problems to solve using machine drawings and a multimeter/ other test equipment.

Who should attend:
This course is primarily designed for Process Technicians/Engineers/Production Shift Supervisors and any technical personnel who wish to gain a good practical knowledge of machine maintenance/troubleshooting and acquire the skills to correct common equipment electrical faults. An abilily to read electrical drawings would be an advantage.

*This programme is a FETAC component (minor) award, certified at Level 5 on the national framework of qualifications (www.nfq.ie ).

The assessment at the end of the programme, if successfully completed, will lead to one credit towards a major(compound) award, of which 8 credits are needed in total. Please see How to achieve a FETAC major award with FPT. Some of our programmes have assignments as part of the assessment which should be completed by the learner after the programme has finished. Full instructions, timelines and ongoing guidance will be given by the course tutor. Most assessments are completed during the programme and results will be made available to learners as soon as they have gone through our Quality Assurance procedures and final submission to FETAC.
