DAY 1
Introduction to Plastic Materials
Where plastics come from
Overview of different materials structure, properties and typical applications
Typical processing conditions and characteristics
Q&A session Polymer processing Techniques
Discussion of the various techniques available for conversion of plastic raw material to products.
Practical demonstrations of Injection Moulding, Blow Moulding and Extrusion (sheet, tube/ blown film) in our process hall.

DAY 2
Extruded Tube Materials commonly used, typical test methods appropriate for tubing and the common defects which may occur
Material and product testing Various material and product testing techniques - demonstrations including tensile, impact, fall dart, melting point, material flow properties, density and material identification techniques

DAY 3
Injection moulded components Materials used, test techniques and common defects (warpage, sinks, surface defects, flash, short shots etc.) Practical demonstrations of defects and processing solutions on our 240 tonne DEMAG moulding machine
Review of course The various topics covered will be reviewed and a question and answer session will complete the course

This course is now FETAC certified and candidates can complete the FETAC examination which comprises of a short written examination and an assignment - successfully completed this counts as one credit towards our Vocational Certificate in Polymer Processing.Certification is included in the course costs.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This course is designed for personnel who work in the plastics industry and wish to gain a comprehensive understanding of the industries materials, testing and various processing technologies. No prior knowledge of the subject material is assumed.

A section of this course will also be delivered at the CNMR (formerly the Polymer Development Centre), Athlone, but attendees will be given full details when booking this course.

*This programme is a FETAC component (minor) award, certified at Level 5 on the national framework of qualifications (www.nfq.ie ).

The assessment at the end of the programme, if successfully completed, will lead to one credit towards a major(compound) award, of which 8 credits are needed in total.
Please see How to achieve a FETAC major award with FPT. Some of our programmes have assignments as part of the assessment which should be completed by the learner after the programme has finished. Full instructions, timelines and ongoing guidance will be given by the course tutor. Most assessments are completed during the programme and results will be made available to learners as soon as they have gone through our Quality Assurance procedures and final submission to FETAC.

Engineers Ireland CPD Scheme
